Itīs also known as the Castle of the Bridge due to its form of fortification. It has its origin in other older door ( 13th century) that got damaged with the erosion of the tides and with historic events ( attacks, fires....) In 1548 the present door was built in honour of the emperor Charles I of Spain and V of Germany
The present door of Renaissance-plateresque style is composed of three parts where there are several motives of the city. In the back part of the door there is an image of St.Roque that replaced the image of the Virgin of Helpless People because itīs said that this saint freed the city from bubonic plague.
It was declared National Artistic Monument
